Global\nseafarers\u2019 charity Stella Maris (formerly known as Apostleship of the Sea) has\nlaunched a new logo, marking the start of its Centenary Year and commemorating World\nMaritime Day today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\ncharity\u2019s new logo and brand update unifies its global network, bringing together\nthe various Stella Maris services worldwide into a single mission and giving it\ngreater recognition in ports around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018Stella\nMaris\u2019 name is recognised widely among seafarers, fishers, and their families\nwho identify the charity\u2019s chaplains and volunteers as \u201cthe ones from Stella\nMaris\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur\nministry has global reach and impact. Having a unified logo will help us\npublicise and celebrate the wonderful work being accomplished,\u201d said Fr Bruno\nCiceri, International Director of Stella Maris Network in Vatican City.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Effective\nimmediately \u201cStella Maris\u201d will be the official name of the charity, replacing\n\u201cApostleship of the Sea\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fr\nBruno adds, \u201cStella Maris has greater potential for global reach and the term\nalso translates well into non-Roman alphabet systems, including Cyrillic and\nChinese. Both these language systems are important to the shipping industry and\nthe crews of ships.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nlaunch of the logo also coincides with the Feast of Stella Maris, Our Lady Star\nof the Sea – the charity\u2019s patron saint – celebrated today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nname and brand change comes amid the COVID-19 pandemic which has seen the\nmaritime industry grappling with the challenges created by this new health\ncrisis, including travel restrictions imposed by governments resulting in\nthousands of seafarers who have finished their contracts unable to return home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAs\nwe assume the name Stella Maris and refresh our logo our chaplains and\nvolunteers are similarly renewing and refreshing their ministry to seafarers,\nfishers and their families,\u201d says Fr Bruno. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\ntraditional Stella Maris approach towards the provision of pastoral care needs\nto be revised in this crisis and we are finding inventive and new ways to be\npresent on the docks and be a Church that sails with the people of the sea,\u201d he\nadds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Logo\nexplanation <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nnew Stella Maris logo has been designed to sit comfortably within the maritime\nsector context while expressing the distinctive nature of our charitable\nservice offering and Catholic foundations. Translated from Latin, the name\n\u201cStella Maris\u201d means \u201cStar of the Sea\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nelements within the symbol characterise Stella Maris\u2019 mission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nanchor symbolises Hope<\/strong>: when the anchor is dropped at sea, it holds fast\nto keep the ship and crew safe – just as we hold fast to our hope in God to\nkeep us safe. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lifesaver\nsymbolises Faith<\/strong>: when a seafarer falls into the sea, they put their trust\nin the lifesaver to save them – just as we put our faith in God for eternal\nsalvation.

\nThe heart symbolises Charity<\/strong>: the heart of Christ is full of love for\nall – our charitable works are animated by the love of Christ.
\n
\nThe rays of light symbolise the Light of Christ<\/strong>: the light emanates from\nthe Heart of Christ (the heart), shines towards our Faith (the lifesaver) and\nis rooted in Hope (the anchor).
\n
\nAnd finally, the waves of the sea mark the environment for our mission – a\nsource of livelihood for seafarers, but also a reminder of danger and death.\nAccepting and believing in Faith, Hope and Charity leads seafarers and their\nfamilies to the safe harbour of Heaven. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

100\nyears of supporting seafarers<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stella\nMaris was founded in Glasgow in October 1920 and established to support\nseafarers in need. One hundred years later it is the largest ship visiting\nnetwork in the world, providing seafarers with practical and pastoral support,\ninformation, and a friend in times of need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About<\/strong>: Stella Maris, (formerly known as Apostleship of the Sea), is a registered UK charity. It relies on voluntary donations, grants and legacies to continue its work. 90% of world trade is transported by ship. However, the life of a seafarer can be dangerous and lonely.
