{"id":1229,"date":"2021-05-22T13:09:26","date_gmt":"2021-05-22T13:09:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/?p=1229"},"modified":"2024-01-12T16:15:00","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T16:15:00","slug":"vaccines-for-seafarers-in-tacoma-and-seattle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2021\/05\/22\/vaccines-for-seafarers-in-tacoma-and-seattle\/","title":{"rendered":"Vaccines for Seafarers in Tacoma and Seattle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>By Susan Huppert, NAMMA<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International seafarers receive Coronavirus vaccine in the Northwest ports of Seattle and Tacoma, Washington. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nNorthwest Seaport Alliance manages most of the waterfront activities in the\nSeattle and Tacoma harbors. Existing among the same population, but with a\ndifferent mission, are the Seattle Seafarers\u2019 Center and the Tacoma Seafarers\u2019\nCenter which are concerned with the wellbeing of the international seafarers\nwho man the ships. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The business side of the ports has taken note of the human factor: the seafarers. Executive Director of the Seattle Seafarers\u2019 Center, Rev. Cristi Chapman, and Paul Peterson, director at the Tacoma Seafarers\u2019 Center are jointly benefiting from a unified effort to ensure seafarers have access to a vaccine against the Coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through\nthe Northwest Seaport Alliance agency, Lou Paulsen, Director of Strategic\nOperations and Risk Management, Port of Tacoma, manages the assets of the two\nports. Paulsen oversees the activities of the waterfront enabling skilled and\ncoordinated operations of the two ports. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted the missing opportunity of providing COVID-19 vaccine to visiting mariners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeafarers\nplay a unique role,\u201d said Paulsen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His observation began the search for individuals with the existing infrastructure natural to the care of seafarers. The seafarers\u2019 centers were that. A virtual meeting connecting the two seafarer center directors and Discovery Health, a provider specific to the maritime industry. The pair of enthusiastic directors partnered with a willing provider, launching the effort. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\nis a tremendous social justice opportunity to those who have difficulty to\naccess the vaccine,\u201d said Paulsen. \u201cIt has been marvelous to see.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks\nto efforts to coordinate seafarers\u2019 needs with the services of Discovery Health,\nthe first crew received the Johnson &amp; Johnson vaccine on May 11. At least\n20 international seafarers have been vaccinated in Seattle. Three upcoming\nvaccination dates for seafarers are scheduled for the Seattle port.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six\nvessels in Tacoma have received the vaccine, with two additional planned for\nnext week.&nbsp; Discovery Health is willing\nto visit ships at anchorage and climb gangways to administer vaccines. The word\nis spreading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Discovery\nClinic is amazing to work with,\u201d said Chapman. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Locating\npeople within a port community who can creatively find access to vaccines for\nseafarers is a key. Highlighting the seafarers\u2019 role within the global economy\nand their needs helps those in the maritime community connect them with\nresources already established. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\ncrew members of vessels that come to our gateway are now able to receive these\nservices. We are elated to see it all come together,\u201d said Paulsen.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Seafarers Center is working to get the word out. Chapman is thankful for the <a href=\"https:\/\/namma.org\/vaccines\/\">NAMMA website<\/a> which she can refer ship captains and seafarers to for accurate data. In addition, the Seattle Marine Exchange provides a summary for shipping agents. Posting on Facebook and word of mouth are common among seafarers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery\ncrew is talking about it. The dam has broken,\u201d said Chapman. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapman\nis concerned for three additional ports in Washington, north of Seattle as they\nare outside of the three-county range of Discovery Health. But the story is not\nover on that yet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\nare working hard looking for options,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s\nbeen a whirlwind, but we have been able to pivot,\u201d said the relatively new\ndirector of the Seattle center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She encourages others that gaining access for their seafarers will disrupt their routine, but in a \u201creally good way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When\nvaccinated, many seafarers will have ease going home and when signing new\ncontracts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFamilies are quite relieved,\u201d said Chapman. \u201cIt\u2019s going to get better.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Photo: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/SeattleSeafarers\/photos\/pcb.4080295788696804\/4080283875364662\/\">Facebook &#8211; Mission to Seafarers-Seattle<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Susan Huppert, NAMMA International seafarers receive Coronavirus vaccine in the Northwest ports of Seattle and Tacoma, Washington.
