Understanding the significance of seafarers as key in a global market is increasing as new organizations join efforts to vaccinate the world-wide workers. Approximately 1,700,000 seafarers, on internationally trading merchant ships have struggled through the pandemic for access to vaccines in various ports throughout the world, due in part to restricted shore leaves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently,\nthe State of Florida established a COVID-19 vaccine site through the Department\nof Emergency Management. By using a cruise terminal at the Port of Tampa they\nare reaching port workers. Included in the declaration is \u201cthose who work on\nships\u201d according to Tampa Port Ministries Seafarers\u2019 Center Director\/Chaplain,\nSteve Finnesy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beginning\nin mid-May vaccine opportunities became available. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFor\nsix weeks we were able to take nurses on board vessels to vaccinate crew\nmembers,\u201d said Finnesy. \u201cWe were also able to extend the program to Port\nManatee,\u201d their neighbor to the south on Tampa Bay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nState program enabled vaccination of 434 seafarers at Tampa from mid-May to\nmid-June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Developing\nCOVID vaccination programs has raised awareness of the seafaring community in\nnew arenas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Establishing\na clinic within the port has been a three-year project for Finnesy. While still\nin process, the international seafarers\u2019 need to get vaccinated has created an\nopportunity with the University of Southern Florida\u2019s College of Nursing. Following\nthe end of the State program, an active partnership began with the nursing\nstudents. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\napproached them, and they were looking for a way to engage with the seafarers\nspecifically,\u201d said Finnesy. The timing was perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nnurses arrive at the center daily and are transported to ships. More than 172 crew\nmembers have been vaccinated through this process, so far. Direct contact with\nseafarers is having a positive impact on college students and volunteers,\naccording to Eric White, Inspector for the International Transport Workers\u2019\nFederation. Raising awareness among the general population about the seafarers\u2019\nrole in the global supply chain is important. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Port Manatee staff transport seafarers to locations outside the port for vaccinations including Walmart pharmacy, Winn-Dixie grocery chain pharmacy, Walgreens and the Ellenton Discount Pharmacy. By May 10, 296 seafarers had been vaccinated. Anchor House chaplain, Alan Howe is alert to any possible avenue of support for the seafarers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nopportunity to participate in vaccines for seafarers at Port Manatee inspired\none pharmacist near the port. When Howe, transported a seafarer to the\npharmacy, he asked Dr. Ken Patel, if he would like to help with additional\nvaccines for seafarers at the port.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\ntold him I would love to,\u201d said Patel. \u201cIt\nis a great opportunity to help them. I was very satisfied at a personal level\nby seeing them excited after getting vaccines. Now they can be more secure\nand free earlier without quarantine. Plus for some seafarers, vaccines are\nhard to find in their own country due to high demand.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cSupplying access to vaccines for those\nonboard helps us with agents and the entire maritime community,\u201d said Finnesy. People\nsee that seafarer ministries have a valid place in the port community. It is\nadding value as a whole.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finnesy\nalso works closely with ITF to hurdle barriers to service. The partnership with\nthe seafarer centers helps work around potential challenges. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnytime\nyou can get more healthcare toward seafarers is a good thing,\u201d said White. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

White\nalerts seafarers\u2019 centers of inbound ships that request vaccines, enabling efficiency\nin organizing access. White\u2019s ability to coordinate with ship owners who may be\nunsure about the vaccination programs also helps. He refers others to https:\/\/namma.org\/vaccines\/<\/a> for\nvaluable information. Most often, a lack of information can be eliminated. White\nprovides clarity when seafarers, captains or ship owners are not convinced by\nthe seafarers\u2019 center staff of the value available to them. The current\nprograms are free at Tampa and Port Manatee. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve\nhad positive experiences with our tag-team approach, perhaps because an ITF\ninspector is more trusted. We are there for the crew exclusively and our track\nrecord is a pretty big statement,\u201d said White.    <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Timing\nis a challenge. Ships docking on weekends and limited staffing as escorts still\nexists. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I would say I am feeling more satisfied by helping seafarers, as I know that now I am helping on a global level to end this pandemic,\u201d said Patel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentiment at sea is similar according\nto an email Finnesy received from a ship captain after his visit to the Port of\nTampa where his crew was vaccinated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really important for crew members,\u201d he wrote. \u201cIt is going to relieve their daily anxiety as they travel around the world.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
