Thanksgiving filled the bridge of M\/V Bow Star as the Reverend Brendan J. Cahill, bishop promoter for Stella Maris celebrated Mass with 13 Filipino seafarers at Point Comfort, Texas, the first week of November. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a mesmerizing experience to watch the bishop celebrate the Holy Eucharist on the bridge with the seafarers,\u201d said Rhonda Cummins, ship visitor at the Port of Point Comfort. \u201cHe was so attentive to their needs and they were so respectful and gracious for the opportunity.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting\nthe spiritual needs of others is a practice like no other. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nPoint Comfort, Cummins visits each ship that docks and often calls on ministry\npartners to celebrate Mass when the ship captain requests. Due to changing\narrival times for the M\/V Bow Star it was a bit of a dance to find an available\ncandidate. Thankfully, when the ship finally arrived, Bishop Cahill and two\nco-workers were available to take the nearly hour-long drive to provide for the\nseafarers\u2019 spiritual needs on a chemical tanker. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis\nwas the first time and we were so excited,\u201d said Cahill. \u201cWe had been talking about\ncelebrating Mass for seafarers for about a year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deacon\nEddie Huse serves the Victoria parish of Holy Family of Joseph, Mary and Jesus.\nThis was his initial ministry opportunity on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\nwas a blessing to see the faces, to meet the young crew, and to understand what\nthese men supply us,\u201d said Huse. \u201cThe seafarers were very reverent. We had\nworship aids. They knew all the prayers. It was not lost on them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serving\nseafarers is a cultural walk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cI was struck by the universal nature of our\nfaith. It impressed me to see people from the Philippines worshipping the same\nas we are,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is still the Mass.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sister\nRosario Resendez serves the Diocese of Victoria, with Bishop Cahill and was\nable to accompany the bishop. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\nwanted to go because I heard it had been a long while without communion for\nthese men,\u201d said Resendez. \u201cWe always have the sacraments. I wanted to be with\nthose who hadn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nfirst time on a vessel in this role was eye-opening as she witnessed the \u201cbehind\nthe scene\u201d working of the seafarer\u2019s experience on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a whole world we didn\u2019t know about,\u201d she said.  \u201cThe ship was huge, the people were beautiful and their hospitality was huge. They were so grateful the bishop came.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From\nthe bridge of the large vessel, the guests witnessed a holy moment when a striking\nevening sky converged with the feeding of spiritually hungry souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was an experience I will never forget,\u201d said Resendez. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
