{"id":1383,"date":"2021-12-23T00:31:41","date_gmt":"2021-12-23T00:31:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/?p=1383"},"modified":"2024-01-12T20:33:17","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T20:33:17","slug":"christmas-gift-program-for-seafarers-expanding-in-seattle-port","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2021\/12\/23\/christmas-gift-program-for-seafarers-expanding-in-seattle-port\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Gift Program for Seafarers Expanding in Seattle Port"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>by Susan Huppert, NAMMA<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More\nthan 35 churches are volunteering in the Christmas Ditty Bag Program for\nseafarers at the port of Seattle, Washington. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople\nhave been so generous,\u201d said Rev. Christi Chapman, Executive Director of the\nSeattle Seafarers\u2019 Center. \u201cI was blown away by the people\u2019s engagement in\nthis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nprogram has a history of involvement. This year volunteers came from an even\nlarger circle. The generosity stretches from Baptist churches to the Church of Jesus\nChrist of Latter-day Saints. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among participants is the Episcopal Church of St. Antony of Egypt in Silverdale, Washington, which hosted a Ditty Bag sewing party in October where volunteers sewed 100 bags for Christmas giving. In November, additional volunteers stuffed the bags with gift items including hats, body-wash, game cards, socks, sunscreen, lip balm, chocolates and more during the annual Ditty Bag Day. This year, Discovery Health donated 1000 medical-grade hand sanitizers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncenter plans to provide 1,000 to 2,000 bags this Christmas season. The\ndistribution of gifts to the international seafarers began Nov. 24 and will\ncontinue to the end of January. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Seattle Seafarers\u2019 Center received a $400 gift from the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) Seafarers\u2019 Trust via NAMMA to assist with the growing demands of the Christmas outreach. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\ngift was a huge relief for us,\u201d said the executive director. \u201cWe continue to\nbuy additional basic necessities to complete the bags.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis\nhas always been an ecumenical ministry. There is a common theme and desire to\nwork together in a meaningful way,\u201d said Chapman. The Seattle Seafarers\u2019 Center\nis an affiliate of the global Ministry to Seafarers and shares its space with\nCatholic chaplains also serving seafarers. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nArchdiocese of Seattle\u2019s Director of Pastoral Care and Outreach, Tom Cotton, is\ninvolved in the Seattle Seafarers\u2019 Center as a Catholic partner. He also serves\non the ministry\u2019s board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cotton\nhas presented Christmas gifts to seafarers in Seattle and met them personally.\nHe shares his insight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\ngifts say \u2018we see you, we honor you, and we respect the work you do,\u2019\u201d said\nCotton. \u201cIt helps them feel less invisible. They feel cared for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About\n60 ships berth monthly between Seattle and a much smaller but growing port in\nEverett, Washington, where a new couple has just volunteered to serve the ships\nin their port. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBob\npicked up 100 bags for the ships there,\u201d said Chapman. \u201cHe is so incredibly\nenthusiastic.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finding\nvolunteers during the pandemic has stressed many missions. But in Seattle and\nEverett, those with a personal or professional connection to the sea find\nmeaning in giving back through the port ministries. The influx could not have\ncome at a better time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomething\nshifted,\u201d said Chapman. \u201cThere is some stirring of the Spirit within people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mac\nMurray, a retired Episcopal priest recently settled in Seattle. While searching\nthe Diocese of Olympia website he discovered the church\u2019s partnership with the Ministry\nto Seafarers. Before long he was picking up carloads of ditty bags from\nBellingham and Redmond for the Christmas giving program. A sailor himself, serving\nseafarers fits. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\ncommunity involvement includes the greater Seattle area. And the environment in\nthese churches is marvelous,\u201d said Murray. \u201cThere are knitting groups all\naround cranking out hats for the program. Hats, hats, hats.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Volunteering\nas a ship visitor, the retired priest enjoys transporting gift bags from the\ndonors and delivering them to the ships. When he arrives with gifts at the\ngangway, word spreads throughout the ship as he advances to the crew mess for\ndistribution. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\ncrew is just delighted to have the bags,\u201d he said. \u201cSuddenly almost all the\ncrew appears; to see their level of excitement &#8211; oh gosh!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time is ticking, days are passing. Like elves at the North Pole, the positive pressure is on.
