From the largest to the smallest, outreach to seafarers is a Christmas priority. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\nwe celebrate Christmas, the seafarers of the world who provide the tinsel and\ntraditional trimmings for us will be lacking their own. No family gatherings or\nChristmas morning delight for those living at sea. That\u2019s why Christmas giving\nto seafarers matters to each of them.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At\nthe Norfolk Seamen\u2019s Friend Society, a retired pastor, now serves as chaplain\nto those who dock at the Norfolk International Terminals. Mariano Biazon began\nvolunteering five years ago. Today he continues his commitment to care for seafarers\nwhere three ships dock per week. He wants to meet them face-to-face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\nNorfolk, where increasing amounts of cargo continue to flow, there is no\nseafarer\u2019s center. Chaplain Biazon operates from his home. Although his\noutreach is small in comparison to some, the value of connecting with those working\non the ships is critical.  During the Christmas\nseason, he and his family and friends set up shop in his garage to prepare\ngifts for seafarers who dock at the terminals of the port. He finds that caring\nfor those who live and work in isolation cannot be overlooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\ntry to meet any available needs,\u201d said Biazon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Norfolk Seamen\u2019s Friend Society will receive a $400 gift from the ITF Seafarer\u2019s Trust, through the North American Maritime Ministry Association to assist with their Christmas giving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\nare so glad to be a recipient. We are very fortunate,\u201d said the chaplain. \u201cThanks\nto NAMMA, the ITF and the International Christian Maritime Association, we are\ngoing to give 200 ditty bags away this year.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\noutreach has only a tiny core of volunteers. Yet, Biazon, retired from 22 years\nserving a congregation, says as long as he is able he will continue to do the\nport ministry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nturnaround time for the vessels is short. Some only remain in port 24 hours. Many\nseafarers cannot get off their ship. Biazon senses the anxiety of the crew when\nhe meets them to deliver Christmas cheer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey\nare very busy, but they make time,\u201d he said. \u201cWe sing some carols together. I\ngive them the gifts and they are very happy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thema\nAspiras, a Filipino businesswoman, has volunteered for the Seamens\u2019 Friend\nSociety for more than five years and serves as a board member for the outreach.\nShe understands the plight of the seafarers from her personal experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\nused to go on board and transport seafarers before the pandemic. Since then, we\nare not able,\u201d she said. \u201cOnly pastor Biazon and his wife go now and I am glad\nthat they do that. I support the Christmas giving 100 percent. The seafarers so\nlook forward to that.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As cargo continues to move around the globe, seafarers leaving Norfolk will travel a bit lighter in heart, knowing someone cared this Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
