Her committed partner in seafarers&#8217; welfare work, Ute Brinkmann has a heart for seafarers. She doesn\u2019t visit ships. She bakes cookies. Every week dozens of cookies are delivered and slid into the chaplain\u2019s backpack as she heads for the port. Parking alongside the massive vessels she proceed up the gangways to give cookies to seafarers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is my calling,\u201d said Brinkmann with\ndelight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair met when Brinkmann noticed some\nempty cookie tins at Trinity Lutheran Church where they attended. After\nlearning about the port ministry, the 61-year-old German lady was hooked.&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe secret of serving seafarers spilled\nover in my life,\u201d said Brinkmann.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So every week she bakes fresh cookies for seafarers. Not just a few, but dozens, all done using her small, but mighty oven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBaking cookies for them is my mission,\u201d\nshe said. \u201cI will never drop that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even when she has to bake at 6 a.m. on a\nSunday, she does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it is a calling you can never stop\nthat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brinkmann, a skilled builder and reconstructionist\nof violins and master of many other trades has been baking cookies for delivery\nsince 2009. She loves her personal role in the massive world of seafaring. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is not the cookie itself,\u201d said\nBrinkmann. \u201cIt\u2019s the fact that seafarers know someone is thinking about them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCookies make people happy,\u201d said\nSetaro.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As she bakes for many nationalities,\nBrinkmann found that basic cookies cross cultures the best. She bakes\nshortbread. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She feels the more she bakes the more\nseafarers are positively affected. &nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair cannot recall when the cookie tins were first placed at the New Haven church by the International Seafarers\u2019 House in New York. &nbsp;It has been quite a while. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brinkman grew up in Germany and recalls as\na child hearing a radio program that aired on Christmas Eve. She heard families\nsending messages of love to family members away.&nbsp; Somehow the calling to bake for seafarers hit\na nostalgic nerve as she remembered others missing their families at Christmas.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt had a big impact on me as a child,\u201d she\nsaid. \u201cBaking cookies for seafarers away from family has a big impact for me as\nwell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes we need to ask, what can I do?\nWhat am I here for? Serving seafarers like this gives me purpose.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She has no plans to slow down, only to\nhumbly inspire others. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe all can hear the call.
