This rather modest mission began in 2016 from the doorstep of a 43 ft. x 10 ft. trailer. The structure was towed from a parking lot to Station 43 at the Port of Oshawa. Volunteers painted and renovated to create a place of comfort and care for those who would find themselves in this small port. The Mission in Oshawa quickly became significant for international seafarers and continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Current Regional Director for The Mission to Seafarers Canada Judith Alltree remembers the introduction of the Oshawa outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe worked hard to set up that trailer affectionately named after Archbishop Terrance Finlay, a highly regarded leader of the Anglican Church of Canada. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a tiny space,\u201d said Alltree. \u201cThere\nis still no running water there, but seafarers love to get off there. The\nwelcome is huge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The structure within the Port of Oshawa\nappears insignificant at first glance. Its mission is not. The port of Oshawa\nonly accommodates four ships at a time. It is a rare occurrence that more than\ntwo are in port. Yet each ship of perhaps 20 seafarers is met in Oshawa\npersonally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oshawa is small but significant to a dedicated ship visitor, Jill Wylie who attentively tracks ship movements. Because of the port\u2019s size, the contact with seafarers can tend to be more immediate.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Terry Finlay Seafarers\u2019 Center feels to\nsome as their personal neighborhood mission where they serve with grace looking\nfor no response or return. They ensure that the tiny outreach is the best it\ncan be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no holding them back,\u201d said Alltree.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wylie echoes that message explaining that\nthe volunteer time given to seafarers is like \u201cmitzvah.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen asked by seafarers why I do this, I\ntell them it\u2019s something where a blessing is conferred upon the doer when a\nfavor or act of kindness is done for another,\u201d said the Oshawa volunteer.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She understands their need. Seeing the\nfaces of those who have been at sea for 45 days finally able to get off their ship\nin Oshawa, or those who have faced stormy seas on the Atlantic arrive in port,\nher purpose settles within. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Christmas outreach is a joyous undertaking\nfor the Oshawa center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One volunteer, Vyvyan, struggles with\narthritis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor more than 30 years of concern for\nseafarers, she has knit hundreds of scarves,\u201d said Alltree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The human touch the seafarers miss is given\nthrough these gifts. &nbsp;Thanks to the hands\nthat craft these gifts those working at sea, see themselves as human, rather\nthan a cog in a global industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the recent pandemic, up to 15\nvolunteers were involved in Oshawa in some form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, many have dropped off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, there are only two ship visitors.\nChristmas giving is now their focus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wylie has been collecting gift items since\nlast winter. This is her seventh season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One Christmas Eve she received a WhatsApp\nmessage from a seafarer requesting Christmas decorations for the mess room of\nhis vessel. With limited time and goods left on the store shelves she accomplished\nher goal without hesitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI know we can make a huge difference,\u201d she\nsaid. \u201cIt\u2019s gratifying to be able to help these guys with whatever they need.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nothing given is without thought. Gift\npackages of toiletries, games, candies and necessities, along with hand-made\nhats and scarves will be given again this year. Alltree finds the generosity of\nthose connected to the Port of Oshawa a very humbling thing to watch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHowever small it may look to others,\u201d said Wylie, \u201cthis is what we do.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Photo: Volunteers pack Christmas presents with Mission to Seafarers Southern Ontario.
