From new initiatives to international partnerships, this year showcased NAMMA&#8217;s commitment to seafarers&#8217; welfare and maritime ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the NAMMA <a href=\"https:\/\/namma.org\/conference-2024\/\">Conference <\/a>held in Newark, NJ, from September 24-26. This gathering brought together NAMMA members, international partners, and inspiring speakers. The conference not only celebrated maritime safety, highlighted by the display of a Titanic life vest, but also provided a platform for long-standing and emerging leaders to share their insights. Thanks to the ITF Seafarers Trust, this program has supported 72 interns since 2016. These young professionals bring fresh energy and perspectives to maritime ministry, and many continue their work in the field long after their internships. Their contributions enrich NAMMA and the wider community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A leap into technology saw NAMMA introduce a <a href=\"https:\/\/namma.org\/chat\/\">chatbot<\/a> on its website. Designed to provide reliable answers and resources, the chatbot represents a step forward in engaging with a digital audience. It\u2019s a work in progress but promises to enhance NAMMA\u2019s outreach and accessibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The celebration of members is at the heart of NAMMA\u2019s mission. This year, distinguished service awards were presented at both the NAMMA <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/09\/30\/celebrating-exemplary-service-nammas-distinguished-service-awards-2024\/\">Conference<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/02\/16\/namma-distinguished-service-awards-presented-to-fr-sinclair-oubre-and-sharon-emerson\/\">Houston<\/a> Training in February. These awards recognize the extraordinary dedication of individuals who serve seafarers with compassion and perseverance. Hearing their stories was a highlight of these events, offering a glimpse into the transformative impact of maritime ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/09\/27\/the-mare-report-2024\/\">The MARE Report<\/a>, NAMMA\u2019s flagship publication, shone brightly in 2024. With contributions from talented writers like Susan Huppert and audio recordings by Don Sheetz, the print magazine and news website captured the year\u2019s achievements and shared best practices across the network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Training remained a cornerstone of NAMMA\u2019s work, with February\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/02\/17\/learning-and-fellowship-namma-training-2024-in-houston-texas\/\">Houston Training<\/a> drawing participants from diverse nations. This, combined with online courses such as <a href=\"https:\/\/maretraining.com\/\">MareTraining<\/a> and the Ship Welfare Visitor course, exemplifies NAMMA\u2019s commitment to equipping members with the skills and knowledge needed for effective ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strategic planning played a pivotal role in NAMMA\u2019s activities this year. A notable example was the work in <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/11\/20\/strategic-planning-at-foyer-des-marins-sept-iles-celebrates-50-years-of-service-and-sets-a-vision-for-the-future\/\">Sept-\u00celes<\/a>, QC, where NAMMA helped encourage a local ministry. These planning sessions, coupled with <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/08\/06\/insights-from-nammas-regional-zoom-conversations\/\">best practice sharing<\/a>, support NAMMA members in navigating challenges and charting new paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian National Seafarers\u2019 Welfare Board achieved a milestone in November with the presentation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/11\/15\/canadian-national-seafarers-welfare-board-awards-first-elisabeth-bertrand-humble-servant-award-to-patricia-sarazen\/\">Elizabeth Bertrand Humble Servant Award<\/a> to Patricia \u201cPatty\u201d Sarazen of Montreal\u2019s Ministry to Seafarers. This event was a beautiful celebration of Patty\u2019s remarkable contributions to seafarers&#8217; welfare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International collaboration flourished through NAMMA\u2019s partnership with the International Christian Maritime Association (<a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/09\/06\/icma-gathers-in-geneva-for-annual-meeting\/\">ICMA<\/a>). These connections allowed NAMMA to share best practices and learn from global peers, fostering a spirit of unity and shared purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, NAMMA represented industry best practices at various conferences, including CMAC in Canada, and CMA Shipping and <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/10\/24\/navigating-uncharted-waters-addressing-risk-and-seafarer-safety-at-the-2024-namepa-conference\/\">NAMEPA<\/a> in the U.S. These gatherings provided opportunities to engage with the maritime industry and advocate for the welfare of seafarers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond these top ten, 2024 also saw a creative burst of media activity, with <a href=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/index.php\/2024\/07\/16\/a-day-at-bunbury-mission-to-seafarers\/\">video tours <\/a>of seafarers&#8217; centers and vibrant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/124915888@N06\/\">photos<\/a> capturing NAMMA\u2019s work. In November we passed 10,000 photos uploaded to the photo website since we began a decade ago.
