This is simply not\nacceptable.\u201d<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>(LONDON) Thursday 28<sup>th<\/sup> May &#8211; The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has issued <a href=\"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ICS-COVID19-guidance-for-ship-operators-for-the-protection-of-the-health-of-seafarers-v2.pdf\">updated health guidance for the global shipping industry <\/a>to ensure ship operators and crew can safely deal with seafarers struggling with medical conditions during the coronavirus pandemic. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screenshot-2020-05-28-07.32.45.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-714\" width=\"158\" height=\"224\" srcset=\"https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screenshot-2020-05-28-07.32.45.png 514w, https:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Screenshot-2020-05-28-07.32.45-212x300.png 212w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 158px) 100vw, 158px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ICS-COVID19-guidance-for-ship-operators-for-the-protection-of-the-health-of-seafarers-v2.pdf\">Updated guidance 28 May 2020<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itfseafarers.org\/en\/news\/emergency-medical-evacuation-finally-granted-seafarer-after-indonesian-authorities-reject\">Alarming\nreports<\/a> indicate that in some cases seafarers are being denied medical\nattention by port authorities. Many cases of seafarers suffering non-COVID\nrelated medical conditions being refused entry to port or denied medical\nevacuation for over 4 days are being reported. Reminding governments of their\nobligations to provide medical care for seafarers ICS will address a virtual\nmeeting of healthcare professionals, organized by the World Health Organization,\nInternational Maritime Organization and International Labor Organization, where\nthe latest guidance for seafarers will be discussed.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Guy Platten, Secretary General of the\nInternational Chamber of Shipping said:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis <a href=\"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ICS-COVID19-guidance-for-ship-operators-for-the-protection-of-the-health-of-seafarers-v2.pdf\">guidance<\/a> should give confidence to national governments that crew changes can and must be carried out. Especially when there are critically ill crew members on board. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re receiving\nalarming reports of seafarers who are suffering from serious medical injury\nsuch as a stroke, be denied medical evacuation for over 4 days. This is simply\nnot acceptable.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ICS-COVID19-guidance-for-ship-operators-for-the-protection-of-the-health-of-seafarers-v2.pdf\">48-page document<\/a> builds on the previous guidance issued in March, providing comprehensive recommendations on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Safe port entry<\/li><li>Shipboard measures to address\nrisks associated with COVID-19 <\/li><li>Managing an outbreak of COVID-19\non board ships <\/li><li>Managing other medical issues during\nCOVID-19, including medical assistance to seafarers in ports <\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the outbreak of the virus, Covid-19\nrelated restrictions and the drastic reduction of air traffic have prevented\nover 200,000 seafarers from routine changeovers. Spending an extended period\nonboard, these seafarers are at risk from adverse health effects, including\nfatigue and mental health issues. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new guidance should serve as a reassurance to governments and port authorities that it is fully possible to conduct crew changes in a safe and effective manner. Urgent action is now required to ensure that no other seafarers are subjected to prolonged period without medical assistance if they need it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prominent international organizations consulted\nin the production of the guidance include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>World Health Organization (WHO)<\/li><li>International Maritime Organization\n(IMO)<\/li><li>International Labour Organization\n(ILO)<\/li><li>International Maritime Health\nAssociation (IMHA)<\/li><li>European Centre for Disease\nPrevention and Control (ECDC)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/marereport.namma.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/ICS-COVID19-guidance-for-ship-operators-for-the-protection-of-the-health-of-seafarers-v2.pdf\">full guidance<\/a> will be presented at a virtual meeting today held in partnership with the WHO and other international bodies including the IMO and ILO.
