Durban, South Africa – 14 August 2024
The International Christian Maritime Association (ICMA) successfully hosted its Africa Regional Conference from August 12 to 14, 2024, at the Blue Waters Hotel in Durban, South Africa. This significant event brought together over 40 participants from across the African continent, focusing on the theme “Adapting to Change: Sustaining Our Work.” The conference was a pivotal gathering of maritime ministry leaders, seafarers’ welfare organizations, and key stakeholders from various sectors, all committed to enhancing the support and care provided to seafarers.
The conference commenced on August 12th with a warm welcome from Dr. Jason Zuidema, ICMA’s General Secretary. Dr. Zuidema expressed his gratitude to all who contributed to making the conference a reality, particularly highlighting the crucial partnerships that sustain ICMA’s mission. He extended special thanks to the ITF Seafarers’ Trust for their generous financial support, which made this gathering possible.
Ron Kusel of the German Seamen’s Mission in Durban, representing the local hosts, echoed the sentiments of welcome. He encouraged participants to enjoy not only the conference discussions but also the vibrant culture and hospitality that Durban has to offer.
The first day featured a thematic presentation by Rev’d Cedric Rautenbach, ICMA Regional Coordinator and Mission to Seafarers Africa Regional Director, on building sustainable partnerships. Rev. Rautenbach emphasized the Christian foundation of ICMA, highlighting how this shared identity unites its diverse members. He used biblical narratives to illustrate the importance of sustainability in ministry, setting a reflective tone for the discussions that followed.
Nothando Minange from the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI) shared insights on promoting the well-being of future seafarers, stressing the importance of missions in ensuring that seafarers know they have support in ports around the world. This was followed by a session where government and industry perspectives were explored, with Capt. Ian Hlongwane from the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and Jono Whittington, Managing Director of Rennies Ship Agency, providing valuable insights on the importance of collaboration for seafarers’ welfare.
On August 13th, the conference continued with discussions led by Dr. Jason Zuidema on ICMA’s past and future plans, with a particular focus on networking, professional development, and advocacy. Forbes Maupa of MTS Durban shared his experience of participating in an ICMA training program in Singapore earlier in 2024. The day also included sessions on adapting to change in seafarers’ missions, with Wimpie van Schoor of CSO and Jaco Leeuwner of Biblia Harbour Mission sharing best practices learned over the years.
One of the highlights was the story shared by Peter Cottrell of the Durban Seafarers’ Mission, reflecting on the mission’s journey of renewal since 2018. His testimony was a powerful reminder of the impact that collaborative, ecumenical efforts can have in transforming seafarers’ lives.
The final day, August 14th, was dedicated to the critical issue of seafarers’ mental health and wellness. Johan Smith from the Sailors’ Society presented on the evolving understanding of wellness in the maritime industry, while Dr. Nick Park-Ross of ShipMed in Durban provided sobering statistics on the mental health challenges faced by seafarers. Eva and Mark Classen of MTS Richard’s Bay shared insightful stories to understand the experience of female ship visitors.
The conference concluded with an afternoon of cultural exploration in Durban, followed by a closing devotion at the Durban Seafarers’ Mission. This ecumenical event, enriched by the diverse contributions of many partners, ended with a joyful braai, symbolizing the fellowship and shared purpose that united all participants.
The ICMA Africa Regional Conference 2024 was not just a platform for discussion but a significant step forward in sustaining and adapting the vital work of supporting seafarers across Africa. The insights and connections made during this conference will undoubtedly continue to inspire and guide the efforts of maritime ministries in the years to come.
